Forager’s ferment

September 13, 2010

We’re at the height of the blackberry season and while few people cultivate brambles I know plenty who look forward to a good harvest from hedgerows and scrub land – in my case it’s a car park near the house which this year has produced wonderfully large, sweet fruits, despite our wet August!

We’ve made some bramble jelly and a few bramble and apple crumbles always make up for the cooler temperatures of late September, but if you can get hold of a few pounds of blackberries you could also try making wine.

Lynda at The Home Brew Shop in Essex was an early supporter of Lourish so I asked her if she might lend a recipe for a seasonal glut. Being the nice person she is, she obliged and sent her recipe for blackberry wine, below. As long as you can provide the fruit, she can provide everything else you might need from her shop! Well, you could start a new exchange and offer something of yours but what if you’re always interested in swaps of tomatoes? How about being alerted whenever something you want is being exchanged in your area…

What’s better than a swap? A giveaway, of course!

August 17, 2010

Swaps are great, but in this current time of plentiful fruit and veg there have been lots of things offered for free on lourish.com.

Fruit trees are burgeoning and it seems to have been an excellent year for plums, damsons and greengages, but it was an offer of celeriac plants that caught an eye here at Lourish HQ.

See the first televised swap on BBC Look East!

August 13, 2010

The Lourish HQ runner beans are famous! BBC Look East came to film Dave’s swap with Dan on his allotment in Coton and talked to Dave about why he created lourish.com.

You can see the film and a report all about how great it is to share your own and swap instead of shop here on the BBC website – http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/cambridgeshire/hi/people_and_places/newsid_8909000/8909052.stm

Lourish on the radio!

August 12, 2010

Lourish was on the radio this morning! You can listen again on iPlayer to the Jeremy Sallis Cambridgeshire Breakfast show and hear Dave talk to Jeremy about what Lourish is, how it got started and call the good people of Cambridgeshire to action to join lourish.com and share their own fruit and veg by swapping instead of shopping!

Be quick though, it’s only available for the next 7 days – http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0097g3y/Cambridgeshire_Breakfast_with_Jeremy_Sallis_12_08_2010/ Dave’s on 1 hour and 40 minutes in

No takers for your swap? Don’t forget to promote it!

August 6, 2010

If you’ve created an exchange and you’re waiting for someone to offer something, you can really improve the chances of a bite by doing a bit of self-promotion.

When you view one of your own exchanges you’ll be given the option to tell others about it by email, on Facebook and Twitter or by something we call the “exchange link”.

It might at first seem strange to be telling your friends about your swaps, but there’s every chance that they’ve been secretly coveting your courgettes when they come round for coffee! And if you’ve got friends who are not in your area they might well know someone who is, so it’s still worth getting the word out on to everyone.

Lourish has launched!

August 3, 2010

It’s party time here at Lourish HQ as the brand spanking new lourish.com site is now up and running and ready to help you swap your surplus fruit and veg!

So, while we tuck in to the jelly and ice cream and get out the twister, take a look at lourish.com, sign up and let us know what you think – we’d really love to hear from you.

If you’ve got a surplus of something, head to the exchange and be the first in your area to start a swap and exchange all those courgettes for something you don’t have. To give you an idea, Lourish HQ is swapping some chillis and cucumbers. It’s dead easy and if you like it, don’t forget to tell your friends.

Have fun, swap your surplus, share your own and, most of all, raise a glass to the hard work of the Lourish team who have made it all possible! Well done boys and girls, now go have some fun on the bouncy castle, you deserve it!

Dave

But what exactly is Lourish?

July 20, 2010

We realise that we’ve been a bit short on detail here at Lourish HQ and the question “But what exactly is Lourish?” has been asked by some of you kind people who helped us by filling in our survey (for which we are very grateful indeed, so thank you).

I must apologise for not explaining Lourish a bit more and a bit sooner; it has been a busy few weeks here at Lourish HQ as the final few bugs are being squashed ready for the launch of the Lourish Exchange, which should be helping you “share your own” in the next week or so. I’ll be posting some early pictures of the site on flickr when I get a chance, but today I want to give you some detail about what to expect from Lourish.

Grow your own / Share your own

June 7, 2010

However hard you plan, in a small plot or with limited time, it’s very hard to organise your growing so that your crops don’t all mature at once.

The salad crop on the Lourish plot is a good example; the first crop is now bolting as we’ve failed to eat it quickly enough and now it’s rather over-crowded. If we’re not careful some will go to waste and here at Lourish we are definitely not fans of waste!

In contrast to the bolting salad, after some cold days our spicy greens are a month off, while the spring onions and radish are delayed because, well, because we weren’t organised enough.

Since we won’t be able to eat all the lettuce before it flowers we’ll have to try to give it away this week, which while wonderfully selfless, wasn’t the original purpose of growing our own!

If we’re unlucky we’ll be buying lettuce until the rest of the crop is ready and you can’t help thinking that if you knew a few other people growing their own in your area you could turn this problem into an opportunity for some fruitful trading. I’m sure someone nearby must need some salad and some may even have a glut of something that I would like.

I think it’s time to go from growing our own to sharing our own.
